Short answer: April to November, when it's dry, sunny and 25–30°C nearly every day. Long answer: it depends what you're coming for — Vilanculos has a whale season, a kitesurfing season, a bargain season and a green, stormy season, and they don't all line up.
The two big seasons
- Dry season (April–November). Blue skies, low humidity, calm seas and cooler nights (bring a jersey for July evenings — it can dip below 15°C). This is prime time for island trips, diving and doing nothing beautifully.
- Wet season (December–March). Hot (30–35°C), humid, with dramatic afternoon thunderstorms rather than week-long washouts. The bush turns green and the crowds vanish. This is also cyclone season — direct hits are rare but not unheard of, so keep an eye on forecasts if travelling January–March.
Season by interest
- Humpback whales: July to October, often visible from the dunes and on island crossings.
- Kitesurfing: September to January, when the southerly trade winds blow most reliably.
- Diving & snorkelling: good year-round; visibility tends to peak May–October.
- Fishing: the marlin run peaks October to January; sailfish are best June–September.
- Lowest prices: February to early April and November — shoulder weeks when many lodges discount.
