Vilanculos rewards doing very little — but if you can peel yourself off the sand, there's a surprising amount packed into this small stretch of coast. Here's the full list, roughly in order of how often guests tell us "that was the best thing we did".
On and in the water
- Sail to the Bazaruto Archipelago. The headline act. Giant dunes, flamingos and snorkelling on Two Mile Reef — we've written a whole guide to day trips.
- Learn to kitesurf. The bay is shallow, warm, flat and breezy — close to perfect teaching conditions. The kite season blows from roughly September to January, and there are IKO-certified schools right on the beach.
- Ride a horse through the shallows. Beach rides at low tide, splashing through ankle-deep turquoise — suitable for beginners, unforgettable for everyone.
- Dive Two Mile Reef. Turtles, rays, moray eels and seasonal humpbacks. Two-tank trips from the dive centres in town.
- Kayak the mangroves. Paddle north along the coast at high tide and you'll have kingfishers, crabs and the odd curious fisherman for company.
- Go deep-sea fishing. The channel holds sailfish, king mackerel and giant trevally. Catch-and-release for billfish is the norm with the better charters.
On dry land
- Watch sunset from the red dunes. Twenty minutes north of town the coast lifts into rust-red cliffs above the bay. At low tide the sand flats below turn into a mirror. Bring a cold drink; thank us later.
- Do the market run. The central market is the town's engine room — fruit pyramids, capulanas (the printed cloth you'll want to take home), and the fish section at its theatrical best mid-morning when the boats come in.
- Eat seafood like it's your job. Lobster, crab curry, matapa, the day's catch grilled over charcoal — see our seafood guide for what to order.
- Walk the beach at low tide. The bay drains for hundreds of metres, leaving sandbars, starfish and dhows leaning on their hulls. The walk south towards the lighthouse is the quiet one.
- Catch live music. Friday and Saturday nights, the beach bars take turns hosting marrabenta and Afro-house. Ask whoever's pouring your drinks where tonight's music is.
- Day-trip to Inhassoro. An hour north, this even-sleepier fishing town faces Bazaruto's wild northern tip — a good excuse for a coastal drive.
